The Best Beaches in Koh Samui — A Local's Map
Ten beaches worth your morning — plus two that look great on Instagram and aren't. Written by our concierge team.
For swimming and snorkelling
- Silver Beach (Haad Thong Takhian) — small, sheltered cove between Chaweng Noi and Lamai. Clear water, good snorkelling. Go before 10 am.
- Choeng Mon — long, shallow, kid-friendly with actual palm shade. The best family beach on the island.
- Thong Sai Bay — reached only through the old Imperial hotel, but the bay itself is public. Still feels secret.
For sunsets
- Lipa Noi — fine white sand, no jet-skis, flat water. The sun drops behind Phangan.
- Taling Ngam — further south but quieter still; sunset and dinner at Nikki Beach if you want drama.
- Bang Por — the local-expat's sunset spot, cheap beachside seafood shacks.
For long walks and dogs
- Maenam — six kilometres of uninterrupted sand. Gentle, uncommercial, dog-friendly.
- Laem Sor — far south, huge low-tide flats, the best shelling on Samui.
For the day-boat to Koh Tan / Koh Mudsum
- Hua Thanon pier — longtail boats to the two small islands south of Samui. Bring snorkel, coral is shallow and vivid.
- Thong Krut pier — same destinations, smaller boats, feels more authentic.
The two beaches we'd skip
- Bang Rak (Big Buddha Beach) — airport noise and thin sand. Go to the temple, not the beach.
- Northern Chaweng — good if you want bars and jet-ski touts; otherwise move 2 km south to Chaweng Noi.
