Plai Laem

A boutique cape between Big Buddha and Choeng Mon — serene bays and striking Thai-modern villas.

The Character

Plai Laem is a quiet residential headland defined by two landmarks: Wat Plai Laem (the 18-armed Guanyin temple) and the hillside villas with panoramic views over both Choeng Mon and Big Buddha beaches. Very few hotels, mostly private homes.

The Beach

A series of small bays and rocky coves; not a swim-all-day beach but some of the prettiest sunset spots on Samui.

Where People Eat

Spa Samui's Absolute Sanctuary restaurant, short drives to Big Buddha market, Fisherman's Village and Choeng Mon.

Who Plai Laem Suits Best

Couples, small groups, design-forward guests, and owners of architect-led properties.

Rental Outlook for Owners

Premium ADR in line with Choeng Mon. Strong returning-guest rate.

Why Buy Here

Extremely limited supply — the cape is already largely built out, which protects existing villa values.

Nearby

Big Buddha (3 min), Choeng Mon (4 min), Airport (6 min).

Practical Guide

The headland faces northeast. Plai Laem is not a beach destination — it's a hillside cape between Bo Phut and Choeng Mon, with the Wat Plai Laem temple at its tip and a string of high-end villas climbing the slopes behind it. The water around the cape is calm and clear but the actual swim beach for most guests is Choeng Mon (a 5-minute drive) or Bo Phut (8 minutes).

Seasonality. Demand follows Bo Phut and Choeng Mon — peak December–February, second peak July–August, slowest October–November. View-led villas hold ADR through shoulder months better than beachfront stock because the elevation is the product.

Drive times. Bo Phut / Fisherman's Village 8 minutes. Choeng Mon beach 5 minutes. Samui Airport 7 minutes. Chaweng 15 minutes. Big Buddha 4 minutes — close enough that the temple bell is a faint background through the morning.

Day-to-day amenities. Nearest large supermarket: Big C Bo Phut (8 minutes). Nearest A&E: Samui International Hospital in Bo Phut (8 minutes). Nearest international school: Panyadee British (12 minutes). Plai Laem has a handful of villa-supplied restaurants (notably Krua Bophut and Beach Replay) and the InterContinental's Air Bar is a 12-minute drive south.

For owners. Plai Laem is the most reliable view-led submarket on Samui — the cape orientation gives many villas both sunrise and sunset on the same property, which is rare on the island. ADR for a 4-bed sea-view villa here runs 30,000–55,000 THB/night in peak. The plots that come to market are typically large (1+ rai) and engineered for elevation; build costs are higher than coastal areas but resale liquidity is also stronger.

A note on which Plai Laem you mean. A few listings online conflate Plai Laem with Chaweng Noi or Big Buddha — geographically Plai Laem is the cape between Bo Phut and Choeng Mon, north of the airport runway. If you're looking at a villa described as Plai Laem, check the pin on the map. Our own Villa Majesta, frequently asked about, is in Chaweng Noi rather than here.
