Choosing the Right Villa

The Perfect Family Villa on Koh Samui

Six things we check before we put a villa in front of a family with young children. No fluff — just what actually matters when you arrive at the gate with tired kids and a hire car.

1. The pool — depth, edge, fence

Most luxury villas on Samui have either infinity-edge pools or pools with no perimeter fence. That's fine for couples; with a two-year-old it's not. We look for one of three setups: a shallow end you can stand in with a child, a pool with an actual safety gate, or a pool that's positioned far enough from the bedrooms that you can hear a door open. Tell us your children's ages at booking and we'll filter for it.

2. Ground-floor sleeping options

Samui hilltop villas are stunning — and they have stairs. Lots of stairs. If your family has a toddler, an older guest, or a buggy, we'll point you at villas where at least one bedroom is on the same level as the kitchen and the pool. About half our portfolio has this; we'll flag it on the listing.

3. Walkable beach (not just "near the beach")

"Beachfront" on a listing can mean a five-minute walk down a rocky path. We rate villas as beach-on-foot (under 200m on flat ground with a buggy), beach-by-car (under 10 minutes), or view villa (sea view, no easy beach access). For families with kids under six, beach-on-foot is the sweet spot.

4. A kitchen you can actually cook in

Most luxury villas have show kitchens — beautiful but missing a kettle, sharp knives, baby spoons, microwave, ice. We keep an inventory list for every villa we manage. If you need a high-chair, bottle steriliser or stair gate, we'll add it before you arrive. No charge.

5. Distance to a hospital that speaks English

The four English-speaking hospitals on Samui are all within a 25-minute drive of any of our villas, but if you have a child with a known condition, we'll bias toward villas in Bophut, Chaweng or Lamai — that's a 10-minute hospital reach. See our hospital guide.

6. A driveway you can actually park in

You'll rent a car or a hired driver. Some hillside villas have a single steep concrete slope that's tricky in the rainy season with a wet child seat. We note villas where the drive is flat, gated, and shaded — small thing, big difference.
